LA CALA GOLF

Campo America

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 1

Spectacular downhill open drive to a wide landing area. The fairway bunkers are generally out if reach from the upper tees but are definitely in play from the lower ones. A long narrow and undulating green makes club selection important if a birdie is to be won on this reachable par 5.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 2

A relatively short dogleg right from a
slightly elevated tee. The best line is to
the right of the fairway bunker. The
green sits above the fairway and is set
on a diagonal. Protected by a large
bunker, the wavy putting surface
demands an accurate second shot.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 3

A straightforward tee shot down the
middle between the flanking fairway
bunkers. The approach shot should only
require a short iron or wedge but the
narrow elongated green has subtle
slopes and is well defended on the right
by bunkers. A small terrace at the rear
presents a particularly difficult flag
location.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 4

This is probably the most dilficult of the
par 3s. The green has a steep face and
the right side slopes severely down to a
large bunker and grassy hollows. Shots
to the left encounter steep slopes and
the possibility of being stymied by the
two oak trees. Par here is a good score
regardless of the tee in question.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 5

A short but tricky par 4. Bite off what
you can chew of the mountainside slope
with your drive. or take the safer route
to the right of the fairway bunkers.
Either way the short second shot is
uphill to a narrow terraced green. There
are no greenside bunkers but the
prevailing winds tend to push the ball to
the right.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 6

Another ‘blte off the comer’ tee shot. but
again there is ample room to the left
The second shot is downhill to a landing
area well defined by grunkle and
bunkers. The approach shot is sharply
uphill to a small green defended on the
left by three small bunkers. Though not
long for a par 5, bogies will outnumber
pars.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 7

Wind will be a factor on this downhill tee shot. Cutting the corner of the dogleg is an option for long hitters but will result in an uphill second shot to a blind putting surface. The boomerang-shaped green is fairly large with bunkers left and rear. This is a strong and attractive par 4. well deserving of its 5 handicap rating.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 8

A short uphill par 3 to a relatively large
green with subtle contours. This is a
good birdie opportunity if you get the
distance and direction right.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 9

This is a dramatic double dogleg par 5.
The temptation to cut the comer on the
downhill tee shot should be avoided as
the carry is longer than it appears and
the prevailing wind can push the ball
into the grunkle. From the centre of the
landing area the second shot is either
downhill across the lake to the sidehill
green or safely down to the right for a
pitch over the two bunkers to the green.
Reaching this green in two is a definite
thrill.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 10

The tee shot plays across a valley to a
fairway rising all the way to the green.
The approach will require plenty of club
as short will not get you on. There is
ample room behind the green.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 11

This is the longest par 3 on the North Course. The downhill tee shot to an open-entrance green is inviting. but the hole often plays into the wind. A slight rise in front of the green will stop a weak shot. There is room off to the Iefl and the support mounds to the rear encourage the use of one more club than would appear necessary.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 12

The ideal tee shot here should end up
between the rocks on the left and the
right fairway bunker. Beyond that the
fain~ay dips sharply before rising up to
the green. The right-hand and rear
greenside bunkers are more defensive
than strategic. Putting is made
somewhat difficult by the soft rise
separating the left and right sides of the
green.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 13

The smart drive here is off the hillside to
the right, just below and beyond the
bunker. From the landing area opposite
the rocks it is only a mid or short iron
across the side slope up to the green.
Here again, short of the green will not
suffice. Subtle slopes and a tight left
rear pin position make this green
challenging.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 14

A mid or short iron will get you onto this
relatively large green. Beware of going
too far left, as the green is protected by
bunkers on this side and a steep slope
towards the trees on the bank.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 15

The left dogleg on this long par 5 is
protected by a trio of bu nkers, but for
most players both the first and second
landing areas are generous. Players
attacking the green with their second
shot run the risk of ending up in the
deep valley or hollows defending the
entrance to the green. The putting
green is receptive to long approaches
but only the longest hitters will be able
to take advantage of this fact

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 16

A short and dramatic par 3 with most of
all three of La Cala’s courses in view.
Elevation difference, wind, and a small
lake fronting the green make club
selection ‘and execution’ vital. Laying up
to the left is a questionable option.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 17

The best line for the drive should be the
cart path. There is a lot of grass on that
side and nothing but grunkle on the
right. The approach over a long grass
bunker plays to a reverse-crescent
shape green broken up by ridges and
terraces.

CAMPO AMERICA

HOLE 18

In elevation difference alone, this is
possibly the most dramatic par 5 on the
coast. The tee shot plays down to a
rippled landing area then doglegs
sharply left and down a mogul-covered
“ski slope“ to an elevated and
moderately trapped green. Big hitters
can carry the bunkers and fig trees
guarding the corner to take advantage
of the slope and to set up a reasonable
length second shot to the green. This is
a hole made difficult mostly by the
awkward stances which one may
encounter, but it is a fun finishing hole
for players of all levels.
